A scintillating hat-trick from David Villa gave Spain a clear-cut 4-1 victory over Russia in their first outing at UEFA EURO 2008 and confirmed the immense power of the Valencia CF striker’s partnership with Fernando Torres.

Holders Greece already have a fight on their hands to maintain their grip on the trophy they won so memorably four years ago after second-half goals from Zlatan Ibrahimović and Petter Hansson gave Sweden all three points in their opening Group D match in Salzburg.

Thanks to a 71-minute goal from substitute striker Vaclav Sverkos, Czech nipped a 1-0 victorious start at the Euro 2008 against co-hosts Switzerland at the St. Jakob-Park. Switzerland will be without captain Alexander Frei for the remainder of UEFA EURO 2008 after he tore interior ligaments in his left knee in the 1-0 defeat by the Czech Republic.

Portugal defender Pepe was unable to put his feelings into words after scoring his first international goal to put Luiz Felipe Scolari’s team on the way to a 2-0 victory in their opening UEFA EURO 2008 Group A match against Turkey.
